Day 1 Hawes - Keld 13.5 miles 2350 ft climbed The River Swale in perfect calm. Alan is cosulting the map, honest! . Pretty waterfall, the big one is only accessible via the Pub which was shut Onwards and upwards Most of the days walk was on the Pennine Way Alan, Stewart, Jim and Roy Big Sky! Is this a Cairn or a pile of rocks? The map seems confused. Alan summits a pile of rocks. Grouse, whose population is being increased by conservation, so that they can be shot. Butt House B&B Rooms good, food excellent, mobile cover zero, WiFi non functional. Still reccomended. Day 2 Keld - Reeth, 11.2 miles, 18 km 2399 ft/731 m climbed One of the side streams feeding the Swale The Swale as we climb Swaledale One of our navigators consulting his map. Interesting path, some bits were hands and knees. Another of our navigators consulting his i-pad! Big Sky (ii) Alan and Jim in the distance. And just when you are up, you have to come down To cross the bridge by the old lead mine. Jim has already made it safely. Then climb back up. John catching his breath. The moor in all its post industrial beauty. Reeth is reached, time for a well earned pint! Day 3 Reeth -Leyburn 11.3miles/18.2km walk 1646ft/502m climb Ready to go after a full English breakfast. And of course a big climb straight after breakfast. Reeth in the background behind Roy. Where they hide to shoot grouse, which they did while we walked on. Two locals out rabbbiting with ferrets and nets. God's own country as Alan would say, Bolton Castle where Mary Queen of Scots was once an unwilling guest. Didn't like the narrow stone stiles though. The Bolton Arms, time for a pint methinks. Wensleydale Historic Railway, Alan is a volunteer member. Beautiful old train. If there are edible fungi John will find them, Giant Puffball, delicious if the flesh is still white. The last climb up to Leyburn. Our accomodation, rooms great, breakfast super, WiFi good. Recommended.
